2019 was known to be a breakout year for the entire CSGO professional scene, and several Best CSGO teams will prove their worth this year as well. The Danish esports organisation needs no introduction, as they are considered to be one of the household names in the CSGO ecosystem. They have cemented their position as the best CSGO team ever, which has won 3 Majors in a row. Their amazing performances in FACEIT Major 2018, IEM Katowice 2019 and StarLadder Berlin Major 2019 have gained them three Major trophies and recognition for winning 14 other top-tiered events. According to ESL’s CSGO world ranking, the team has clinched the title of the All Time #1 Team for 490 consecutive days, and All Time #1 Top 10 Team for 1365 days on 19th Jun, 2020. The success of this undisputed CSGO winning team is greatly attributed to their focus on CSGO, unlike other esports teams which have diversified goals in other eSports games such as LoL, DOTA 2 and Fortnite.
Astralis always works hard on their up-to-date CSGO strategy and fundamentals.Overall, 2020 is likely another year for device, evice, gla1ve, dupreeh, Magisk and Xyp9x as they are a force to behold in the 4th Major this November.
Fnatic is one of the oldest esports organizations in the world, having been founded way back in 2004. The London-based team had its glory as the mainstay in the Counter-Strike competitive scene since its inception. When Fnatic switched to Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO), they became one of the top teams in the world. However, with the departure of team members dennis and olofmeister, they have underperformed until late-2019, when Fnatic updated its roster of JW, KRIMZ, Brollan, flusha and Golden, with the latter two rejoining the team. They later went on to win Dreamhack Master Malmo, placing second at Starladder Starseries I-League Season 8, and placing third to fourth at the ECS season 8 finals, after losing to Team Liquid in the semi-finals.
Fnatic is consistently ranked as among the Top 10 best CSGO teams in the world and they are another strong contender in the 2020 Major. Moreover they have a perfect lineup based on individual skill and experience.
The next CSGO team on our radar is a relatively young eSports organisation. Based in Berlin, Germany, G2 is rather impressive in terms of their achievement in major leagues such as DreamHack Open, Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) and ESL Pro League. Ever since their revamp in 2019, they have recruited Nexa and Hunter from CR4ZY replacing Lucky and Shox in their latest lineup. The two players are well-versed in their positions as they are assigned as an in-game leader and rifler respectively. On a side note, Hunter is a cousin of NiKo, who is known as one of the most gifted players in the CSGO esports space and has been in contention for the title of the best player in the world at multiple periods throughout his career. Both Nexa and Hunter could also assist kennyS, one of the quickest and most skilled AWPers in CSGO.
They are currently one of the best Top 10 CSGO teams as ranked by ESL and is currently competing in the qualifiers for ESL Pro League 11, ESL One, DreamHack Masters and Blast Premier Series. Time will tell if they will make a comeback this year.
Originally debuted as YouTubers in 2010, FaZe Clan may be notorious for its long list of controversies, but that did not deter the Los Angeles-based esports team from gaining top spots as the one of the best Top 10 CSGO teams. The European-mixed team led by Niko defeated once-dominant Team Liquid in two different best-of-three series. There were times when everyone was fearful of FaZe, but the team’s lacklustre performance in early 2019 has revealed their flaws as they had no teamwork and their strategy were mainly based on winning individual duels. Fortunately things turned for the better as they removed GuardiaN and NEO and added coldzera into their lineup, resulting in their win in BLAST Pro Series Copenhagen 2019.
In short, there is a lot of potential for FaZe Clain overall. In spite of their lack of a proper in-game leader, the perfect synergy from broky and coldzerra could prove to be an excellent thing for the team.
As mentioned in the beginning of this article, Natus Vincere’s NAVI.1XBET team has won the latest edition of IEM Katowice 2020. Also known as NaVi, the Ukraine-based CSGO esports team boasted Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev, who is known to be one of the best CSGO players in the world. The team has previously struggled to attain success with the stellar roster, which was largely attributed by their inability to perform effectively in the game. However, the young and energetic team is poised to be a lethal force in 2020 after their latest win in IEM this year.
Analysts have stated repeatedly that all s1mple needs to succeed are competent players around him and fortunately for him, 2020 looks like the year he finally has the right team to perform. So far, the working relationship within the team is well-managed, and NaVi should ensure that the peace and harmony is maintained in the team.
Even though Mad Lions did not make it to ESL’s Top 10 CSGO team (they are ranked 16th in the world), the newly-established Spanish esports team had a good start to Spring Split as they went 5-3 in the first four weeks which meant that they were in a 3-way-tie for 4th just one win behind first place. They however continued to show varying performances throughout the rest of the split but due to beating their opponents Misfits Gaming and Origen in the last two weeks they secured 4th place with 11-7 record which meant a place in the upper bracket of playoffs.
Last year has proven to be great for Mad Lions, as their captain Nicolai “HUNDEN” Petersen led the team under the Tricked Esports banner, to victory. Their biggest victory to date came at the V4 Future Sports Festival 2019, which saw them beat MiBR and Virtus.pro to capture the event’s top prize. Now they carry this moment forward into 2020. In the semi-finals of the ICE Challenge in London, they defeated the newly formed OG roster and barely lost to mousesports.
While Mad Lions may be a force to reckon this year, they may have to work on their firepower to outdo themselves for the second half of 2020. Hunden is a tactically proficient and skillful CSGO pro-player, and as he takes on the role as the coach for the team this year, his skill sets would likely benefit the team without hindering their progression in upcoming tournaments. Mad Lions is without a doubt, an underdog, to compete for the honor as the top CSGO team in 2020.
Other Notable Mentions
While there are other proficient CSGO esports teams like Ninjas In Pyjamas, Cloud9 and Mouz which have shown surprising victories in the ongoing group qualifiers for upcoming tournaments, there are two teams which we would wish to give a shoutout for for their outstanding performances last year that may see them emerging as potential champions in 2020, if both teams have rectified their issues on time.
ZywOo is arguably the best CSGO player in the world right now and Vitality seems to be doing fine even as a one-man team at first glance. But the decision of replacing Nbk- for shox has virtually wiped Vitality off the radar in the Top CSGO team list. Despite their excellent play in DreamHack Masters Malmö 2019, Their earlier performances have revealed inconsistencies which cost them a winning ticket to StarSeries i-League Season 8 finals. Therefore, if the team does not change their lineups in the near future, they may risk getting kicked out of the top 5. Or perhaps, ZywOo may look for a new team who can properly tap into his potential.
So far, Evil Geniuses have been doing pretty well in the group stage of Blast Premier Series 2020. But in reality, most of their stats are padded based on qualifiers that they are involved in.
Currently, the Seattle-based team had its fair share of victories in 2019. Their intense battle with Astralis in the grand final of ESL One New York 2019 has gained them a second place as they lost the match point match with a score of 20-22. They fared better in the StarSeries i-League CS:GO Season 8 as they defeated Fnatic to clinch the No. 1 spot, while Ethan was named MVP of the event.
