How To Rank Up In CSGO: 2023 Guide

CSGO ranking system is for many players the only reason that they still play the game. Being able to compete with other players on your skill level and progressively climb in the ranking system is the bread & butter of CSGO.

Many players dream of attaining the global elite rank in CSGO, but to get to that point you need to spend some serious time in competitive matchmaking. Climbing in the CSGO ranks can be a very tiring and daunting task. Every loss will significantly put you behind. Still, there are certain methods that you can use to improve your CSGO ranks quickly. Here’s everything you need to know about CSGO ranking system and how to quickly advance in it.

CSGO Ranking System Explained

The CS:GO ranking system works very similarly to every other online game. Players take part in competitive matchmaking where they get matched with players in the same skill group and every time they win or lose they either advance in the ranking or get moved down. After winning a number of competitive matches players might get moved to a higher division. Likewise, losing too many matches will drop them to lower ranks. At the moment there are 18 different CSGO ranks attainable in the game:

  • Silver I
  • Silver II
  • Silver III
  • Silver IV
  • Silver Elite
  • Silver Elite Master
  • Gold Nova I
  • Gold Nova II
  • Gold Nova III
  • Gold Nova Master
  • Master Guardian I
  • Master Guardian II
  • Master Guardian Elite
  • Distinguished Master Guardian
  • Legendary Eagle
  • Legendary Eagle Master
  • Supreme Master First Class
  • The Global Elite

The Global Elite is the higher rank, with the top players of the world competing with each other, most often in pre-made groups, since the skill ceiling is so high. Although your CSGO rank is not necessarily a representation of your actual skill level, you still need some kind of CSGO skill to make it in Master Guardian and above. Someone who’s not a really good player won’t reach Legendary Eagle Master by accident.

Before you can jump into a competitive matchmaking system in CSGO, you will first need to meet some conditions. These exist in order to ensure that you get good placement in CSGO matchmaking and to prevent an influx of smurfs, trolls, and bots in the online game. To start playing ranked matches, you first need to complete these 3 conditions:

Get Your Account To Prime Status

If your Steam account doesn’t have prime status yet, you will need to take care of this first. Prime status is necessary to play ranked in Counter Strike: Global Offensive, since it can prevent people quickly creating troll or smurf accounts. Although the prime status isn’t a perfect way to prevent this from happening, it can still improve the overall matchmaking experience for all players.

Reach Private 2 Rank

Before you can jump into competitive matches, you will first have to train a bit in casual games. This is done to prevent people from quickly setting up a new account just for surfing. If you want to start playing competitive matches in CSGO, you will have to first get enough exp in casual matches to reach the private 2 rank.

Play 10 Matches In Competitive Mode

After you got your prime account and the private rank, you will need to complete 10 matches to get your rank placement. This is done to test your skill level, so that you end up in an appropriate skill group. Although winning these is important, keep in mind that you will most likely be playing with people who are often at a much higher skill level than you. You can only score 2 wins a day toward getting your matchmaking rank, but after you complete 10 matches this way you will receive your CSGO rank and will be able to play competitive matches normally.

How To Improve Your CSGO Ranks?

Rank climbing can be really frustrating and slow, especially if you’re stuck around silver ranks where your teammates might regularly drag you down, even if you’re playing well. If you want to advance to the higher ranks in CSGO, here are some things that you can try:

For Lower Ranks

  • Remember Not To Tilt – although this is mostly a plague in the lower ranks, tilting even happens on the professional level. It’s easy to get angry while you’re losing and feel like your time invested is getting wasted by bad teammates, but tilting in a match won’t improve your own situation.
  • Practice Spray Patterns – knowing how guns work is an important part of CSGO knowledge. If you don’t know how to properly recoil control or which guns to use in which situations, chances are you will have a hard time climbing ranks. Spray patterns are one of the most basic things you have to know about CSG before you get to higher ranks
  • Callouts And General Map Knowledge – Knowing proper callouts as well as having an idea about the map’s topography can greatly improve your CSGO skills. If you want to succeed at higher ranks in CSGO, you need to know all the proper callouts for every active duty map. General map knowledge will also let you learn about all the best shooting spots and where to expect your opponents.

If you’re playing at higher CSGO ranks, chances are you already know all of these things. Simple tips like these won’t help you at Master Guardian Elite ranks, however, there is still some room for improvement, even in higher skill groups. If you’re struggling at higher ranks, consider these solutions:

  • Optimize Your Game Settings – CSGO has a large number of hidden settings, which can’t be accessed through the simple settings menu. Enabling raw input, changing radar settings or even your viewmodel can all give you a slight edge over other players. Almost everyone in higher CSGO ranks uses some form of optimized settings, so you will also have to adapt if you want to keep up.
  • Watch What The Pros Are Doing – Pro tournaments generally set the meta in lower-rank CSGO games. If pros are doings something on stream or in their match, chances are it’s optimal play. Try watching what they are doing and adapting your gameplay accordingly.
  • Search For High Raks Private Lobbies – Private lobbies with high rank players can be a great way to learn about the game. This way, you can even try playing with people from higher ranks, If you’ll be able to beat them in casual games, chances are you’ll also managed in ranked.
