The most important thing to remember when you get a VAC ban in Counter-Strike Global Offensive is not to give up straight away. You may still recover your account and continue playing CS GO competitive matches if you didn’t do anything wrong in the first place.
With this in mind, let’s learn about the different CS:GO ban types and how to get unbanned from CSGO without waiting around for too long.
How Do CS:GO Bans Work?
The purpose of CSGO bans is to make playing the game enjoyable for every player. A CSGO account will get banned if and when it starts breaking the rules. The misuses include:
- using cheats;
- toxic behaviour and disturbing;
- failing to stay connected to CSGO server status;
- staying AFK and similar.
So, if you don’t want to receive a Counter-Strike Global Offensive VAC ban, you’d best stick to the rules and try not to attract too much negative attention. Additionally, the more your account gets reported and kicked using the vote kick option out of a competitive match in CSGO, the more likely it is to get CS:GO servers ban.
Is CSGO Ban Permanent?
Yes, most types of CSGO bans will be permanent. In addition, CSGO, Steam, or Valve will rarely disclose why you get banned in the first place. A user receives a message from Valve’s anti-cheat system that the account is now banned and can no longer be used to play in competitive matches in CSGO.
If you receive a VAC ban or a game ban of a higher level, it will not disappear automatically. Steam or Valve’s support team would not also help you in this case. Most of the time, this matter is non-negotiable.

However, there’s still a slight chance to get unbanned from CSGO if you never broke the rules or deserved the ban in the first place.
CS:GO Ban Types
There are several different types of CSGO bans accounts can receive. The worst kind of ban is a VAC ban in Counter-Strike Global Offensive. It is a permanent ban that cannot get unbanned.
CSGO VAC Bans
VAC bans in CSGO are permanent and don’t get removed automatically after a defined time has passed. They last forever, meaning your account is no longer eligible to participate in or enjoy competitive matches.
You can get an actual CSGO VAC ban because of using any cheat software to play the game and dominate in competitive wins.
CSGO Game Bans
Contrary to the VAC bans, you can receive game bans in CSGO for a few more reasons than just cheating. The main reasons for this type of CSGO gameplay ban are the following:
- If you have installed identifiable cheats in-game
- Boosting your CSGO account or other accounts
- Displaying toxic behaviour and receiving highly excessive reports from other players
CS GO Overwatch Bans
If you’ve gotten an Overwatch ban in CSGO, your account is under review by CSGO “Investigators”. They are experienced players who have permission to review matches you’ve reported and deliver a ban if they conclude that you deserve it.
There are two types of Overwatch bans:
- Minor Overwatch bans in CSGO last up to 30 days and are received for griefing.
- Major Overwatch bans in CSGO last forever and are mainly obtained for cheating in-game.
CS:GO Competitive Cooldowns
A Competitive cooldown in CS:GO is the least scary type of ban. It also features more reasons to be issued than any other type of ban in CS GO. Most of the competitive cooldowns on your account will disappear automatically after a certain period passes.
Remember, they will pass automatically and cannot be removed by the Client Support, regardless of whether it’s Steam or the Valve corporation.
There are four main types of Competitive cooldown bans in CSGO. There is an additional type called the New Players cooldown, which only allows new players to win a total of 2 Competitive wins per day.
As for the others:
- Level 1: lasts 30 minutes
- Level 2: lasts 2 hours
- Level 3: lasts 24 hours
- Level 4: Lasts 1 week
Aside from that, the main reasons for getting a Competitive cooldown in CS GO are the following:
- Kicking way too many players than necessary
- Being kicked by too many players too many times
- Staying AFK for long periods
- Abandoning server matches
- Grieving and getting reported often
How Do You Get Unbanned From a CSGO Server?
The only way to get unbanned from CSGO is if it was an erroneous ban, meaning if the ban was applied to your account by mistake or some technical issue. Aside from that, nothing will get your CSGO account unbanned. So, if you want to learn how to get unbanned from CSGO, all you have to do is send a simple Steam app appeal.
Follow these steps:
- Open the Steam app on your phone
- Open the navigation panel on the left and click on Support
- Select Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Click on “Gameplay or technical issue”
- Choose “I am having another problem”
- Select “Contact Steam Support”
Do not choose the option “I’ve been VAC banned” here. It will only take you to Steam’s VAC ban page explaining what a VAC ban is.
NOTE: In the early days, when CSGO was a paid game, this used to be done via the following steps. If you purchased the game way back then, you can also do the same by following the process below:
Launch Steam app > go to Account Details > View Purchase History > select the CSGO purchase transaction > click on Help me fix gameplay or technical issues > choose I am having another problem > and click on Contact Steam Support.
As you can see, a ban in CSGO can be quite a serious issue that there’s no getting out of it. Most of the time, if you’re responsible for your actions and got banned because of them, your account will never get recovered.
However, if your ban was issued incorrectly, there’s still a way to get out of it. The best advice is to stick to the rules, stop using CSGO cheats, and be a friendly player.
